The thing is, no matter what you do, the majority of people seem to NEED something like a religion. They do not want to think for themselves, they want to belong to a large group and/or they want some kind of outside confirmation that they are in some way "better" than others. So no matter if the next big thing is going to stay Monotheism, or become Scientology or whatever other trip, there is going to be something resembling one and it will probably be stupid in the eyes of non-believers.

I don't think religion exists to get external confirmation of who is better than who. It's about looking inward and feeling connected with others. To achieve this, some turn to religion, others to philosophy and/or Buddhism or even to tv-series. I once saw a girl ostensibly thinking she was better than everyone else because she was on the guest-list of a musical venue. People don't need religion to display arrogance, when it's already inherent to their personality or when it manifests itself by individuals who feel themselves supported by a group - whatever their cause might be. I think it is unfair to single religion out, mainly because they are 'the next big thing' or 'some trip' which only seems stupid depending on how arrogant or close-minded non-believers might be.

Objectively speaking, I must acknowledge Scientology as a faith. It has sincere adherents.

However, I view Scientology as being just barely a religion. It was clearly founded with fraudulent premises. Its beliefs are internally inconsistent. Its approach as a mystery religion is clearly designed to make money and exert power.

The Church of Scientology is a repellent organization that is somewhere between a cult and a crime syndicate. And by spreading absurd ideas about psychiatry, they do real harm by causing people to not get the treatment they need while undercutting valid criticisms of psychiatry from Ssasz to Foucault.
