I used to be a vegetarian, but traveling abroad for several years, it became impossible. Many times in the countryside we would be hosted by a family who shared what little food they had with us, or, in once case, they killed a farm animal to feed us. I wasn't going to be rude, I ate what was offered to me. Upon my return to the U.S. I went back to being an 'opportunistic vegetarian' - meaning that if I have a choice I usually won't choose meat, but if it is offered to me by a friend or family member I won't turn it down. I do occasionally buy meat for myself, but only from our local co-op - where I know it comes from a small, local farm.
