There is no real difference between an Assault Weapon and any semi-automatic gun. Semi-automatic guns generally work on one of two principals, gas operated and recoil operated, any other difference is cosmetic. What funny is that my hunting rifle is much more powerful than my "assault rifle" and if I made a few minor changes to my "assault rifle" it would no longer be considered and "assault rifle" and my Brother in law made a few minor changes to his non-assault rifle and suddenly it was and assault rifle.

The only way to ban "assault weapons" is to ban ALL semi-automatic weapons, including all hunting rifles.
