I would say it involves a little bit of everything. The musical skills sure do count. The fame and success too, whether it be financial or critical. Obviously, the originality of the music they made should also be taken into consideration. A group who released a song or an album years before another band might be more influencial, but not necessarily. Clearly, when you know other, newer artists named a band as an influence, it should contribute to helping you make your choice as well. Finally, your overall knowledge on music should be helpful. For example; have you heard similarities between the sound of specific grunge bands and the sound of recent groups and musicians? I believe I have included the major grunge bands.
