The foolish demand of setting dates for the end of conflict has long been the WRONG action. Setting dates sets our Military up for Failure. It informs our enemies and aids them in their planning. All military goals must be oriented to accomplishment of the Goal, not a date. Know this: As you plan, so are your enemies planning and whatever you do will not likely go exactly as planned. The realities of conflict are constantly in flux. Therefore setting Any date will never work because the situations that result will Always alter those plans. Obama was Wrong to set a date for withdrawal and we now have proof of that foolish decision.

I see two reasons as to why he did this:

1- Many Americans wanted the U.S. out of Iraq as soon as possible, from high ranked politicians to ordinary folks. Saying "We'll eventually withdraw" was not enough. People wanted a precise date.

2- The people in Iraq were more and more concerned with the presence of U.S. military on their territory. It kinda defied the country's sovereignty.

But I do agree with you. It was a mistake to set a clear date. I'm just wondering if Obama had a real choice.
