Let's not worry about the guns so much as the mental illness behind the gun deaths.
I'm all for researching how to keep people from killing other people (that same sentiment extends to government sending 'their people" to other countries to kill other people, as well as governments killing people (the death penalty) when those people have killed someone), however, let's pull our collective heads out and aim at the real problem - the deplorable state of mental health and mental welfare in a country that doesn't give a hoot about the mentally ill... unless of course said mentally ill become a political hot button issue guaranteed to bring in the votes...
