The thing about popular music today is that most of it is the same regurgitated content designed to be successful and popular. Every now and then you get rare artists like Daft Punk or Lorde, etc who really bring creativity and originality to the scene, but more often than not you have songs designed to make money.

Popular music nowadays is actually (way) better than it was before. Current songs that are popular amongst a broad demographic cover the following subjects:

  • Working for your money/accountability
  • Standing your ground/defending yourself against a former trusted friend
  • Being attracted to someone but leaving it at that
  • Allowing yourself to not enjoy yourself at parties when you don't feel like it
  • Believing in yourself or someone you care about
  • Self-worth/actualizing
  • Basically enjoying your youth
Regurgitated, how? It's consistently inventive (and catchy).

On the other hand, perhaps we both have a fondness for foreign artists (since the artists you mention are respectively French and Australian).
