The light and the dark side are just the two sides of the force, it's the power of the force, so whether you use it for good or bad is up to you. The "good" and "bad" stated in the universe is actually a faction war, really, between the Jedi and the Sith. In the modern Jedi Academy, the students are given the abilities of both light and dark for them to accomplish their missions, so the dark is just another power of the force--just like the light. If i am given the choice to be truly light or truly dark, i will choose neither of them. But if i had to choose between the two of them, i would choose the light side, because the light focuses on regenerative and defensive abilities, while the dark focuses on destructive and offensive abilities.

You bring an interesting point. There's an uncertainty as to what exactly pushes a good Jedi to turn into bad Sith in Star Wars. Is it just the Jedi who is giving in, like us mortals who give in to our desires?... Or are the Jedi tempted by something else as well? Remember in The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker finds an area and feels something's odd about it and Yoda tells him it is some sort of "dark force area".

So that would mean the force itself has a good and bad "form".

Another very interesting point is the whole prophecy concerning the one who will bring a balance to the force. This could mean the force used to be balanced. There were no Jedi as we know them now, and there were no Sith either.

I like to think that the force is like a big pool of water. When you swim, you affect the water by creating waves, but it also affects you, by holding you and by making you float. And you can only affect the water/force that is near you. But I also believe the force has some sort of on-and-off consciousness, that it is trying to restore the balance it used to have, and that would explain why Jedi warriors fell to become Siths over time - because there were many, many Jedi knights and very few Siths. I think this theory kinda fits if you think Darth Vader turned good as he killed Emperor Palpatine. Because at that point, the Sith were much stronger than the Jedi.

Of course, it's kinda hard to theorize on this now. George Lucas is more or less involved in the universe and the books that used to be canon aren't considered as such anymore in the Disney Star Wars universe.

The light side.

This is not some abstract or fictional choice. The light side refers to authentic spirituality based in peace, love, and calm. The dark side refers to the basest natural tendencies in humans, the most banal.

The light side is the only route to true happiness (what we call "eudaemonic" happiness). It is the only route to making a difference worth enacting. It's the only route to the kind of life anyone wants.

Don't make me wrong but I believe the author posted wrong the question. I think he meant:
If you could controle the Force as in SW, would you become a Jedi or a Sith?

Because you don't choose to control the dark or light, you choose which controls you.
But a Jedi uses the Dark Side sometimes (even if they try to avoid that, but it happens several times in SW), and a Sith uses the Light Side too.
Light and Dark is a whole, like the Yin and the Yang.
So if I'm right with the question, I'd choose Sith, because I'd never leave my emotions behind, because I can be what I am as a Sith, while a Jedi is supposed to become a cake, a machine identical to everything else.
To me, a Jedi's are what we blame nowadays: brainwashed and easy to manipulate people. A Sith is free. I want to be free.

Dark side, living as a Jedi with minimal attachment to anything would be just sad.

Well,

I would find it hard not to be seduced by the power of the dark side. I have to be honest about it. I think I would end up trying to take over the entire underworld of both the Outer Rim and core planets. But even as THE crimelord I put bounty's on all slavers. All slaves in servitude would be bought their freedom or outright freed the first day I take my rightful place as Sith Lord Crime Boss. Or better yet, an Evil Sith Abraham Lincoln.

I would join the Dark Side, for the jedi code as shown in the prequel trilogy is quite reminiscent of religious priesthood codes, forbidding natural emotions and trying to have an emotionless view of life, wich is a way of thinking that doesn't take natural human emotions in consideration and therefore is not valid.

This is the kind of argument a Sith would use on a Jedi in order to convert him. :P

Sure, the Sith do follow their emotions, but once they have fallen to the dark side, they also are prisoners of their emotions. They are constantly thrown from one emotion to another and they can never find peace. Their days are comprised of unstability and the only way they can relieve themselves from the anger and sadness they are subjected to is to plunge deeper into the dark side by being evil and gaining more power from the dark side. But it eventually comes back; the guilt, the jealousy, the doubt, etc.. Are you sure you want to live like this?

I would rather join the light side because the heroes of the stories that always come out on top are aligned with the light.

The light side. Keep calm and remember: good always triumphs over evil
