Japan as a country to visit - discussion

Japan (Japanese: 日本 Nippon or Nihon; formally 日本国 Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, literally "[the] State of Japan") is an island nation in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The characters that make up Japan's name mean "sun-origin", which is why Japan is often referred to as the "Land of the Rising Sun".

Japan is a stratovolcanic archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest islands are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which together comprise about ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area. Japan has the world's tenth-largest population, with over 126 million people. Honshū's Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the de facto capital of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents. For the first time in my life, I went to Japan last year. I was astonished by how different was social culture and how visible it was at "every corner". Bowing, of course, was in first place. People talked gently and kindly (including talking to me) without a slight sign of arrogance which could be annoying in western cultures. They achieve such kindness by sort of distance called tatemae (official face) which is opposite to honne (true face). I like this distance as a tourist. I'm not sure how I could live with it for longer time though.

I would assume that Japan would be a great place to visit but please, please! don't think that it is purely defined as in everything being "kawai" "desu, desu" and stuff. From what I've seen, Japan is much more than a holy ground for otakus and people that constantly watch anime. It has a timeless history that is incomparable to must countries, so please, never hastily define a country trough their popular media...
